Exercise: Basic meditation and breathing exercise

One of my favorite meditation practices to train basic meditative focus and concentration is connected breathing. To do this, find a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed. Generally, it’s easiest to find calm and focus in the early morning or right before bed when the body naturally is ready to relax. Get into a comfortable position with your back straight and focus on your breathing. With every exhale, imagine letting go of the everyday impressions and creating space in your consciousness for the subtler pieces of information. Try to breathe gently but deeply without pausing at the end of each inhale and exhale. Just let them melt into each other as naturally as possible, like the ebb and flow of the ocean.

Notice how every inhale creates momentum for the exhale and vice versa. Imagine how, with each inhalation, the light energy around you breathes into you and connects you to everything that is while you simply relax. With each exhalation, you are breathing into the infinite room of existence. Feel your connection to everything through your breath, and become one with the field of wisdom and love that surrounds you at any time. Then, gently bring your attention back to the waves of your breathing and the stream of light flowing through you. Stay here for as long as you like. After a period of time, you can optionally ask for specific insights or have your awareness focus on specific pieces of information you wish to receive. Are there subtle energies and information in the room that you weren’t aware of before? Or information that you picked up during the day but didn’t have the capacity to consciously perceive? Let flow to you what wants to be received.
